01The plant

What was being treated

An outdoor three-chamber grease trap of about 250 litres serving a retail food operation for a Japanese supermarket chain, taking roughly 200 litres a minute through influent, separation and effluent chambers.

02Before

How the material got there

Oil was accumulating in the trap faster than a monthly cleaning contract could stay ahead of, and each visit took a long time because of what had built up between them.

03Treatment

What was applied, and how

Slow-dissolving blocks suspended in the trap, in phases. The first put a single block in the separation chamber. The second added one to the influent chamber and stripped the netting off it, because the trap's internal flow turned out to be slow enough that the blocks were not dissolving fully where they hung.

Every result in this library was measured at an operating plant treating with one of the formulations SediLogic supplies, over the window stated above. It is a field result published as reported, not a controlled trial we ran.

04Sizing

What the quantity was set against

Per chamber, against the trap's flow and against how each chamber actually behaves. A block only works at the rate water moves past it, which is why the first phase under-delivered and the second did not — the change that mattered was where the block sat, not how much of it there was.

05Outcome

What followed

The monthly cleaning schedule was not changed. What changed was how long each one took.

At the start

Oil accumulating through the chambers with carryover into the effluent chamber, and a long clean at every monthly service.

At the close

Oil in the separation chamber roughly halved after the first phase and minimal after the second, carryover into the effluent chamber substantially reduced, and each pump-out taking about half the time.

06Limits

What this record does not establish.

The fifty per cent is a visual assessment. The trap was photographed before scheduled cleanings and the images compared; nothing was sampled and no grease concentration is published at either end, so the figure is an observation rather than a measurement. Nothing was left untreated. The first phase is worth as much as the result: the same product, in the same trap, under-performed until where it hung was changed.

Only the volatile organic fraction of a sludge responds to any of this. Grit, sand, silt, mineral precipitates and plastics remain at any dose, here and everywhere else.
