How to measure sludge in a lagoon
The methods available for measuring lagoon sludge depth and volume, what each one can and cannot tell you, and how to produce a survey that is comparable over time.
The short answer
There are two practical methods. A sludge judge — a clear segmented tube lowered through the water column — gives a direct depth reading at a single point and costs a few hundred dollars. GPS-linked sonar mapping traverses the lagoon from a boat and produces a contour map of the blanket with a calculated volume. The critical point with either method is coverage and repeatability: sludge is rarely level, so a single reading taken from the bank will misstate the volume, and a survey is only useful as a baseline if the next one is taken the same way. A complete survey reports depth by location, total volume in dry tons, the volatile fraction determined from a sample, and an assessment of mixing and dissolved oxygen.
Why a single reading is not a survey
Sludge does not accumulate evenly. It builds fastest near the inlet, it moves with whatever circulation the cell has, and it forms an uneven blanket with peaks and troughs. A reading taken from the bank at the most convenient point tells you the depth at that point and very little else. Because volume is what drives both a dredging quotation and a treatment programme size, a survey has to sample enough of the lagoon to characterise the distribution.

What a complete survey covers
- Sludge depth by location across the cell, at enough points to characterise the distribution rather than a convenient sample of it.
- Total accumulated volume, converted to dry tons using a measured total solids content rather than an assumed one.
- The volatile fraction, determined from a sample. This is the only part available to biological treatment, and it cannot be inferred from dimensions or from depth.
- Mixing and dissolved oxygen, because a lagoon that is not adequately mixed will not respond well to biological treatment whatever its sludge composition.
- An estimated dredging cost for comparison, with the provenance of the rates stated.
Making surveys comparable
A baseline is only worth having if the follow-up measures the same thing the same way. Record the method, the track or grid, the equipment, the date and the water temperature. If the second survey uses a different technique or a different coverage pattern, any difference between the two numbers is partly instrumentation and you will not be able to separate it from the effect of treatment.
