Why a dry product cannot fix ammonia
Ammonia is lowered by nitrifying bacteria that do not survive drying, so a dry-only product line structurally cannot address a nitrogen permit. An honest limitation, stated as one.

The short answer
Because the organisms that lower ammonia cannot be dried. Ammonia is reduced biologically by nitrifying bacteria, Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter, which oxidise it to nitrite and then nitrate. Those organisms do not form spores and do not survive any drying process, so a dry product cannot contain them in a viable state, whatever its label implies. That is why nitrifier products are always liquids, made by concentrating cells and resuspending them in sterile water in opaque packaging, where they stay dormant but viable for roughly a year. What ammonia actually needs
Ammonia is not an organic solid, so the enzymes that reduce sludge have nothing to act on it with. It is lowered by nitrification: nitrifying bacteria oxidise ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate, a distinct group of organisms doing distinct chemistry. Those organisms are slow-growing, oxygen-hungry and, for the purposes of a product line, fragile in one specific way.
Why drying is the dividing line
The Bacillus organisms that carry sludge digestion form endospores, dormant and desiccation-resistant, so they survive drying essentially intact and can be sold as a shelf-stable dry solid or pouch. Nitrifiers have no equivalent structure. Drying does not leave them viable, which is not a formulation problem that can be improved around; it is a property of the organism. This is the single fact that most changes what a dry product line can honestly offer.
It is worth being precise, because labels in this category are not always. A dry product can be blended, packaged and sold with nitrogen language on the front, and it can still contain no viable nitrifier at all, because the drying step that made it shelf-stable is the same step those organisms do not survive. A cell count on a dry label tells you nothing about nitrification.
What this means for a nitrogen permit
If the pressure on your permit is ammonia or total nitrogen, a dry product cannot move it, and you should be sceptical of any dry label that implies otherwise. The honest options are a liquid nitrifier product from a supplier who sells one, or a process change such as additional aeration, longer detention or a dedicated nitrification stage, none of which is what SediLogic supplies today. Selling a dry sludge product against an ammonia limit would waste your money and our credibility.

- Can any bacteria product reduce ammonia in a lagoon?
- Only a liquid one that actually contains viable nitrifying bacteria. Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter do not survive drying, so a dry tablet, pouch or powder cannot contain them alive, and a dry product cannot lower ammonia whatever its label says. Products that address ammonia are liquids kept in opaque packaging, and even those depend on adequate oxygen and warm water to work.
