When to start and stop treating
Why lagoon bioaugmentation is a warm-season programme, what water temperature does to biological activity, and how to plan a season so the product is working when the lagoon can actually support it.
The short answer
Treat on a warm-season window. Biological activity resumes as water temperature passes roughly fifty degrees Fahrenheit and spore germination is optimal between roughly 28 and 38 degrees Celsius, so a dose applied to cold water is largely dormant until the lagoon warms. In most of the United States that puts the useful window between late spring and early autumn, with the exact dates set by your own water temperature rather than by the calendar. Product dosed outside it is not destroyed, but it is capital spent ahead of any return, and a season planned around the window will outperform the same spend scattered across the year.
Why temperature governs everything
These products put spore-forming organisms into a lagoon, where they germinate and produce the enzymes that break down organic material. Both halves of that are temperature dependent. Germination is slow in cold water and enzyme activity falls with it, so the same quantity of product does substantially less work in April than in July.
The practical threshold is around fifty degrees Fahrenheit, below which activity is slow enough that treatment is not a sensible use of money. The optimum sits well above it, roughly 28 to 38 degrees Celsius, which most lagoons reach only in the upper layer and only in high summer.
Planning a season
Treatment is a programme rather than a purchase. The pattern that suits most municipal lagoons is a heavier initial period once the water is reliably warm, followed by maintenance dosing at an interval through the season, then stopping as the water cools rather than pushing product into a lagoon that cannot use it.
Where the loading is seasonal — a food processing campaign, a summer population swing at a resort or a park — the useful move is to have capability established before the load arrives rather than responding afterwards. Recovering a lagoon that has already gone anaerobic under load is a harder job than carrying it through the season with capability already in place.
What a season does not do
- It does not reduce the inert fraction. Grit, sand, silt, mineral precipitate and plastics are unaffected by temperature, dose or season, because they are unaffected by biology at all.
- It does not carry over as stored capability. Organisms dosed in September are not waiting in the blanket to work next May in any way you should budget for.
- It does not replace dredging. A programme defers the mechanical event by reducing the treatable share of what accumulates. The inert share keeps accumulating regardless, so the clean-out moves later rather than away.
Cold water, honestly
Cold-adapted formulations exist across this category and are commercially valuable precisely because the season is the binding constraint on everything else. We do not offer one at launch. A plant whose problem is genuinely a winter problem is not well served by the current range, and we would rather say so than sell a warm-season product into a cold-season need and let the result speak for us in six months.
If your window is short enough to change the economics — a northern plant with four usable months rather than seven — that is worth raising when you describe the lagoon, because it changes what a realistic seasonal reduction looks like and therefore whether the spend makes sense at all.
