01The plant

What was being treated

A poultry slaughterhouse in Brazil running 90,000 birds a day, with an effluent works taking 2,250 m³ a day at an eight-day hydraulic retention time.

02Before

How the material got there

On paper the works had enough retention time to meet its discharge targets. In practice it was in biological treatment failure, and the reason was fat. A thick grease cap had formed across the aeration surface and was blocking oxygen transfer into the water beneath it, which starves the biology doing the actual treatment. Effluent BOD sat at 860 mg/L and overall removal efficiency had fallen to 55 per cent.

03Treatment

What was applied, and how

A continuous programme dosed steadily into the treatment train, with no major process change and no new equipment. The target was the grease cap rather than the BOD directly: clear the cap, oxygen transfer returns, and the resident population recovers on its own.

Every result in this library was measured at an operating plant treating with one of the formulations SediLogic supplies, over the window stated above. It is a field result published as reported, not a controlled trial we ran.

06Limits

What this record does not establish.

Eighty-six per cent is a BOD reduction, not a solids reduction, and the two are not interchangeable. No grease concentration is published at either end, so the mechanism the whole account rests on — cap gone, oxygen transfer restored — is described rather than shown. Nothing was left untreated. Ninety days at a slaughterhouse covers whatever the kill floor was doing over the same period, and none of that is recorded.

Only the volatile organic fraction of a sludge responds to any of this. Grit, sand, silt, mineral precipitates and plastics remain at any dose, here and everywhere else.
