01The plant

What was being treated

A petrochemical effluent works carrying part of its organic load on powdered activated carbon.

02Before

How the material got there

Every increase in the incoming organic load meant more carbon dosed, and carbon is a cost twice over — bought, and then disposed of in the sludge it leaves behind. The question put was whether the resident microbial community could be improved enough to carry that load biologically instead.

03Treatment

What was applied, and how

A blend selected for hydrocarbon degradation added to the system, with the carbon dose then reduced in steps as hydrocarbon removal improved, rather than cut at once.

Every result in this library was measured at an operating plant treating with one of the formulations SediLogic supplies, over the window stated above. It is a field result published as reported, not a controlled trial we ran.

04Outcome

What followed

The annual saving is itemised as $102,900 on carbon and $17,700 on the sludge disposal that carbon generates.

At the start

Powdered activated carbon dosed to hold effluent quality, with the dose rising as the load rose.

At the close

Carbon use down 54 per cent with effluent quality held, effluent suspended solids down 26 per cent, and effluent BOD below the permitted figure.

05Limits

What this record does not establish.

The saving is arithmetic on a reduced purchase rather than a measured outcome, and how the 54 per cent was arrived at is not shown — no carbon dose is published at either end. No treatment window is given beyond the annual figure, and nothing is recorded about what the influent did across it. Nothing was left untreated and the works is not named. Reducing a chemical you were buying is a real result; it is not the same thing as a reduction in the material itself.

Only the volatile organic fraction of a sludge responds to any of this. Grit, sand, silt, mineral precipitates and plastics remain at any dose, here and everywhere else.

What we would supply

For this duty, in our range.

SediLogic Liquid is the article in the range that reaches this — a concentrate for systems a solid cannot be dosed into, which covers most of what sits upstream of an industrial outfall. Where the target is instead an accumulated blanket in a holding basin, the sinking solids are the right format and the lagoon products apply.

SediLogic holds a written dose table for wastewater lagoons and for no other duty. Industrial loads are also the least alike of anything on this site — a rate set for one plant's effluent means very little at the next — so a quantity here is settled with a person, against your own stream.

Your lagoon next

This was measured somewhere else.

A different plant, a different loading and a different sludge. What decides your result is how much of your own accumulation is organic and treatable, and whether the dose is sized against the lagoon in front of us rather than read off this page. Tell us the dimensions and we will size it.
