How to tell one sludge bacteria offer from another
Every serious supplier draws on similar organisms from a similar handful of fermenters. What separates sludge reducing bacteria offers is dose discipline, documentation, provenance labelling and stated limits — not the pail.
The short answer
The honest starting point is that the products are more alike than the websites suggest. Sludge reducing bacteria are Bacillus blends, and every serious supplier in this category sources similar organisms from a similar handful of contract fermenters — private label is the norm, not the exception. What separates one offer from another is rarely what is inside the pail. It is everything around it: whether the dose comes from a written, revision-stamped dose table applied to your lagoon or from a rule of thumb; whether the documentation runs to an SDS, a technical data sheet and a lot-specific certificate of analysis with a cell count guaranteed to the end of shelf life; whether efficacy figures carry a provenance label; and whether the seller will tell you plainly when the product will not work. Evaluate on those four axes and most of the category's marketing falls away.
The products are more alike than the websites suggest
A Bacillus spore does not know whose label is on the pail. The organisms used for lagoon sludge reduction — enzyme-producing Bacillus strains, chosen for what they digest and for the endospore that lets them survive drying — are available to any competent buyer from a small number of fermentation houses. Most of the brands in this category, including some of the best-known ones, are private-label operations: a fermenter grows the blend, someone else brands and sells it. That is not a criticism. It is how the category is built, and it means the organism itself is almost never the reason one programme succeeds and another disappoints.
Two practical consequences follow. Paying a premium for the organism alone is rarely buying anything real, because the same organism is usually available under another label. And switching supplier rarely changes the biology — if a programme failed, the cause is far more likely to sit in the dose, the delivery, the lagoon's conditions or the original diagnosis than in the strain library. The differences worth paying for are all outside the pail.
The four axes that actually separate offers
When the organisms are a near-commodity, the evaluation has to move to what the seller adds. Four axes cover almost all of it.
- Dose discipline. A commercial dose should come from the manufacturer's written dose table for the specific blend, applied to the dimensions and condition of your lagoon, with a document revision the seller can name. A pounds-per-acre rule of thumb, a quantity copied from a competitor's calculator, or a case-study amount worked backwards is how under-dosed orders happen — and an under-dosed order reads to the operator as a product that does not work.
- Documentation. Ask for the set: a Safety Data Sheet, a technical data sheet, and a certificate of analysis that is specific to the production lot. The telling figure on the CoA is a viable cell count guaranteed to the end of shelf life, not the count as the batch left the fermenter — the first is what you are actually buying, the second is the flattering one.
- Provenance labelling. Efficacy figures in this category are overwhelmingly vendor-published: measured by the seller, about their own product, without independent verification. That does not make them useless, but a supplier who labels them as what they are is telling you something about how they will treat every other number they give you.
- Stated limits. Bioaugmentation digests the volatile organic fraction of sludge only. Grit, sand, silt, mineral precipitates and plastics remain at any dose, and published reductions run from roughly a third in controlled enzyme studies to around sixty per cent in vendor case studies — reduction, never elimination. A seller who states that unprompted, and who will decline a lagoon that is mostly inert, poorly mixed or on a fixed deadline, is a seller whose yes means something.
What a marketing page tells you by accident
Read the category's websites as evidence rather than as brochures and they are remarkably informative. Reductions reported to a tenth of a per cent imply a measurement precision the field instruments do not support. Case studies without a stated baseline, measurement method or treatment window are anecdotes with good production values. Format presented as potency — a liquid sold as the premium option rather than as the answer to a delivery constraint — is the organism question being hidden: what can be dried decides the format, and the format decides where the product can get to. None of these requires a telephone call to evaluate.

- At the organism level, rarely — the serious suppliers draw on similar Bacillus strains from similar fermenters. What can be genuinely better is the delivery (a sinking solid reaches a benthic blanket that a surface-dispersing product cannot), the dose basis (a written table applied to your lagoon rather than a rule of thumb), the documentation, and the honesty about limits. Those are the differences worth paying for.
- Why do prices vary so much for what sounds like the same product?
- Because the headline price hides the variables. Compare organisms delivered — concentration multiplied by dose — guaranteed to the end of shelf life, not the count at manufacture. Then compare what the dose rate assumes: a cheaper pail dosed at twice the rate is the more expensive programme. Finally compare what comes with it: sizing, review and documentation are part of what a serious supplier sells.
- Is a private-label product inferior to buying direct from a fermenter?
- Not by construction — private label is the category norm, and the organism in the pail may be identical either way. The useful question is what the seller adds around the pail: a dose derived from the written table for your lagoon, pre-sale review, and a documentation set you can defend to your board. Buy from whoever is strongest on those, because a pail from any source still needs a defensible dose behind it.
- Should I trust the case studies on supplier websites?
- Treat them as vendor-published marketing unless they are labelled otherwise — that includes ours. Look for a stated baseline, a measurement method, a treatment window and ideally an untreated control; the absence of all four is the tell. The strongest evidence in this category is the controlled enzyme-study literature, which sits at the conservative end of the range, and we label it as such where we cite it.
