01Why this format
Installations that cannot take a solid form
This is an answer to a delivery constraint, not a better product, and it is deliberately not promoted as one. Where a solid can be dosed, a solid is what we will specify: a dense solid puts organisms where the material actually sits, whereas a liquid dosed into the same system disperses through it. The liquid exists because some installations leave no other option — not because it is the upgrade. Presenting it as a co-equal third choice would invite operators to pick it when a solid would have served them better, which is how the format decision gets made badly across this category.
It works in the metered or poured, as the installation allows, and it suits systems where a puck or pouch is physically impractical.

03When not to buy this
Three situations where this product is the wrong answer.
- A solid form can be dosed at all. If a puck or a pouch will physically work in your system, that is what we will quote, and the liquid would be the weaker choice for the same money.
- The target is an accumulated benthic sludge blanket. A liquid introduced at the surface disperses through the water column instead of concentrating where the blanket sits, which is the whole reason the sinking solid exists.
- You are buying it to satisfy an ammonia or total nitrogen permit. Nitrification requires viable nitrifying organisms, and whether this blend carries them is a question for the manufacturer's written specification — it is not established here, and we will not imply it.

04Microbiology
What the organisms actually do to the material.
The mechanism is enzymatic hydrolysis. Bacillus species secrete enzymes into their surroundings that break large organic molecules into fragments small enough to be taken up and metabolised. The organisms are not consuming sludge directly; they are releasing the tools that take it apart.

Why Bacillus, and why a dry format costs nothing
Bacillus is the single most important bacterial source of exactly these enzymes, proteases in particular. It also forms endospores — a dormant state that survives drying, heat and time essentially intact, then germinates on contact with water and food. For this job the organisms that do the work are precisely the ones that dry best, which is why the two lead formats are dry and why that costs nothing biologically. Nitrifying organisms are the opposite case: they do not survive drying at all, which is why no dry product can address an ammonia permit.
What the published work supports
Mixtures of protease, cellulase and lipase reduce total suspended solids by 30 to 50 per cent and improve settling, with protease and cellulase together outperforming either alone. One controlled study reported 33 per cent volatile suspended solids reduction.
These figures are the mechanism, not a claim about this product: the peer-reviewed enzyme and hydrolysis work they rest on is collected in the scientific literature.
