The short answer

How you apply lagoon bacteria is decided by the format, and the format is decided by where the problem sits. A dense sinking solid is broadcast across the surface and sinks to the benthic blanket it was built to reach — from shore on small cells, from a boat on larger ones, in an even grid rather than piles. A soluble pouch disperses through the water column and suits maintenance dosing and general organic load in an adequately mixed lagoon, placed where flow and mixing will distribute it. Both are warm-season programmes: biological activity resumes as water passes roughly fifty degrees Fahrenheit, so the dose goes down at the start of the window, not scattered across the year. Match the format to the problem first

Format follows where the material sits, and getting this the wrong way round is the most expensive application mistake in the category. A sludge blanket under several feet of water is a delivery problem: only a dense sinking solid reaches the benthic layer, because a product that disperses near the surface never arrives at the material it was bought to digest. General organic load and maintenance dosing in a well-mixed lagoon is the opposite case — a soluble pouch dispersing through the water column is the right tool, and cheaper to put down. Applying a sinking solid

Broadcast it evenly across the blanket area. On a small cell that means a thrower and a walk of the perimeter; on anything larger it means a boat and a grid pattern, because the goal is uniform coverage of the bottom, not concentration at the easy edges. There is nothing to mix in and nothing to agitate — the product is engineered to fall through the water column and release at or within the sludge interface, so the lagoon does the placement work. Two practical notes: fine materials drift in wind, so pick a calm day for shore broadcasting, and if your blanket map is years old, put the product where the sludge actually is rather than where it was — the survey figures from your permit cycle are the map to use.

Applying a soluble pouch

The pouch film is water-soluble: the pouch goes straight into the lagoon, the film dissolves, and the contents disperse. Distribute pouches across the surface rather than committing them all to one corner, and favour the places that will spread them — near the inflow, alongside aerators and in mixing zones. The stated precondition is an adequately mixed lagoon, and it is a real one: in a stratified or stagnant cell, a surface-dispersing format stays near the surface, which is one of the six situations where lagoon bacteria disappoints. Timing: the warm-season window

Temperature governs the programme. Biological activity resumes as water temperature passes roughly fifty degrees Fahrenheit, spore germination is optimal between roughly 28 and 38 degrees Celsius, and a dose applied to cold water sits largely dormant until the lagoon warms. In most of the United States that puts the useful window between late spring and early autumn, set by your own water temperature rather than the calendar. What to expect, and when

Weeks to a season, not days. The organisms establish, the volatile fraction of the blanket digests across the warm months, and the measurable change is blanket depth and, over time, the effluent numbers that depend on capacity. Measure against your own baseline: depths at the same marked points, by the same method, at intervals — that record is both your evidence the programme is working and your early warning if it is not. Published volatile-solids reductions run from roughly a third in controlled enzyme studies to around sixty per cent in vendor case studies, and the inert share of the blanket — grit, sand, silt — does not change at any dose. Handling, storage and documentation

The Safety Data Sheet and the label govern handling — read them before the pail is opened and follow the protective equipment they specify. Store as the label directs, which for dry product means sealed, cool and dry; a dry spore product typically carries a two-year shelf life, and the date that matters is the end of it, because the viable count you are buying is the one guaranteed to that point. Keep the lot number from the pail. The certificate of analysis is lot-specific, and lot traceability — pail to batch to CoA — is part of what distinguishes a documented product from a commodity one; if a supplier cannot produce it, that answers a question you had not yet asked.

Do I need to mix or agitate after applying?
No. A sinking solid is engineered to fall through the water column and release at the sludge interface — mixing it in would work against the design. A soluble pouch relies on the lagoon's existing circulation to distribute it, which is why adequate mixing is a precondition for that format rather than a step you add afterwards.
Can I apply too much?
The table rate is the rate, in both directions. Over-application is mostly wasted spend — there is a finite amount of volatile material to digest and the programme does not accelerate past biology — and it adds organic demand to a lagoon that may be oxygen-limited already. Under-application is the more common failure: it reads as a product that does not work when the real problem was the dose.
When do I re-apply?
Maintenance dosing follows the manufacturer's table for your lagoon — typically a smaller cadence dose through the warm season after the initial programme, sized to hold the blanket rather than reduce it. The planner sizes both phases, and the reorder is the same motion as the first order.
How cold is too cold to bother applying?
Below roughly fifty degrees Fahrenheit water temperature, biological activity is largely dormant and germination slows substantially. Product applied then is not destroyed, but it sits idle until the lagoon warms — capital spent ahead of any return. Wait for the window and dose at the start of it instead.
